Hip mobility - Is it important?

HIP PAIN - WHAT COULD BE CAUSING IT?


Do you experience any hip pain? Does it feel like it’s in the hip joint itself and/or in the groin? Chances are, it could be the mobility in your hip that could be the issue!



The hip joint is a very complex joint - it bends forwards, backwards and can rotate inwards and outwards. There are a total of 15 muscles and 3 major ligaments that cross the hip joint and move/stabilise it!


It is the joint which plays a pivotal role in any lower limb movements such as squats, lunges or on a more functional level walking and running. For athletes, not having sufficient hip mobility means they cannot perform at their best.


Having mobile hips can improve the function of our hip, which in turn can help reduce pain. By improving the efficiency of the hip joint, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of injuries to the hip.


One of the most complaints that we get in the clinic is low back pain. In a lot of instances, the hip can play a part in driving this pain. This is particularly because of how close the hip is located to the back. Any biomechanical issues with the hip has the potential to force the lower back muscles to work harder to compensate, causing overload and thus pain. However, this needs to be properly assessed by a qualified health physiotherapist.
